Don’t panic! I know traveling can be stressful. So this episode is for those who find traveling to be a very stressful, uncomfortable experience. I’ve traveled a lot, and to be honest, out of necessity I’ve had to figure out how to be a better traveler. I’ve developed a great system that has helped make traveling so much more enjoyable and way less stressful!
Each time I’ve had to travel, I’ve learned ways to make it better! And so I thought this would be a great opportunity to share with you some of the tips that I’ve been developing that truly make traveling so much easier.

When it comes to stress free travel, it all starts with packing and planing!

MY TRAVEL TIPS:
1. Make a complete and detailed, time specific list of every minute of your itinerary including prep time, travel time, etc.2. Make sure to add cushion to each item on your itinerary.
3. Create a cliff notes version of your itinerary by major event only. For example; Travel, workout, dinner, meeting.
4. Use your cliff notes to create a list of the exact items you wish to wear, from top to bottom for that event. Include under garments, accessories, the outfit, shoes, etc. Create this list from your memory as opposed to looking in your closet.
5. Create a list of non-outfit related items you need to pack; i.e. laptop, charger, umbrella, toiletries.
6. Use Cubes or small travel bags and pack only one outfit per travel bag. Label each bag according to event such as: Friday night dinner, Saturday am workout. Then place every item from top to bottom, including accessories, and undergarments in each individual bag.

This was most helpful, thank you!
Could you share what brand and size of checked luggage you use, as well as carry on?
I’m assuming your cooled bag with food is separate than your carry on?
Michelle Howard Facca says
Love this! Very good tips, I will definitely be using these for my next vacation. Thx so much!
Chalene Johnson says
That’s awesome! 🙂

Chalene, I am like your sister and panic when I have to pack. Your approach makes it seem logical and easy! This is why I love you (is that weird?) thanks for continually sharing things that make life easier!

I’m traveling this Friday, so this couldn’t have come at a better time! Thank you, Chalene! You are awesome!

I just ordered the ebags as I thought this was an awesome idea. I am hoping you were talking about the slim ones in your podcast. I hope so, or was it the small? They are actually cheaper on the ebag site right now vs ebag as there is a coupon 🙂 Thanks for the tips!!!
Tandy says
Love this! Am i missing the editable printables you mentioned in the podcast? Always love your advice 🙂
Eva says
That’s what I asked yesterday but my comment was deleted.
Chalene Johnson says
Eva the list has been added
Michelle Stahl says
I was looking for the travel lists you mentioned. Can you post or email them to me?
Thanks!!

Loved the tips…We travel all the time and I always overpack. I like the shoes too because we have feet issues so I will lighten the load by carrying on a few pairs! Thank you
Amanda says
Loved the podcast Chalene thank you! One question: what brand of luggage do you like? I’ve tried many and haven’t found one that LASTS and I really like. Thanks so much for all you share 🙂
Wendy Buckland says
I really don’t travel as much as most people, but I learned a ton on how to effectively pack a suitcase! I’m going broke on your AMAZON suggestions. LOL . Did I miss seeing the PDF printable lists somewhere?
Kelley says
Hey Chalene. I love your podcasts. You always talk about your morning routine listening to podcasts of books on tape. You have really inspired me and your podcast is one of my daily routines!! Thank you. I can’t remember which podcast you talked about the sheets that you love. Can you tell me again. Thanks. Kelley

I’m a lifer. I loved this episode of the Chalene Show. I’m a die hard packing list-maker. However, I travel for vacation, not for business, where you would need to be wearing different outfits for each client meeting or public appearance. Like you I pack food (string cheese, almonds, bars, foil packed tuna). I’m a big fan of the one-bag philosophy, so I pick a color scheme (say black and cream) and work all my pieces into that scheme, creating a capsule wardrobe, if you will. I try to pack as few outfits as I can, wearing things that I can mix and match. That rules out the use of those cute little bags for me 🙁 I wear my hiking boots on the plane, they are a necessity for me due to foot troubles. So I just deal with untying and retying. no big deal. I bring ballet flats and one pair of black dressy heeled sandals and I’m pretty much covered. I have a little yoga slipper to wear in the hotel room and for when I do some body weight workouts or use my exercise bands. I can use my hiking boots for power walks/city hikes. I love your show, and your social media and I own all of your workout programs!! Thanks for all you do Chalene!

What is the brand of tubes that you showed during one of your snaps recently for your supplements when traveling?
Kelly says
Love all the travel tips, I’ll be incorporating many into my own system, thank you! Quick question – I don’t see any info about how to add the check marks next to the packing list in Notes on my iPhone. I tried googling and those instructions don’t seem to work either (I’m guessing because of the new OS 10 update.) Any thoughts? I know Chalene mentioned that handy trick in the podcast. Thank you!
Whitney Jelinek says
It’s actually in the “Reminders” – not the notes 🙂 Hope that helps!
Stefanie says
Hi Kelly
So I played around in notes with the new iPhone upgrade. When you create a note, if you look down at the bottom, you see an icon for trash, a check mark, a squiggle pen and something else for the last one….that lovely check mark is a way to create a checklist in notes and you can check and uncheck tasks without them deleting. I hope this helps 🙂

Thank you Chalene! For sharing all the knowledge and making our lives more enjoyable 🙂 I’m a traveling violinist, and for sure will be using many of your tips in my next tours. Would you mind giving us a link to the little cube-bags you pack your outfits in? They look awesome. I know you’ve mentioned the brand doesn’t matter, so maybe just the size? Thanks so much!
Perry says
Uh! never mind, I think they’re called Ebags and in a small size. Thanks a lot anyways!!
Marty says
Love these tips. I use ebags as well but not the individual ones you have pictured. Will need to try these.
I’m not seeing the info on making a list on notes or reminders you spoke about in the podcast nor a picture of it, if you had one.

Thank you so much for this!!! I always enjoy your podcasts, but this was so helpful for packing–whether travel involves flying or a road trip.
You’ve been such an instrumental part of my fitness and life journey in bettering myself with your podcasts and programs (I’m in LOVE with PiYo and of course TurboFire!).
Have a phenomenal week!
Chalene Johnson says
Awe! thank you for your sweet comment Stefanie! 🙂

Thank you! This is wonderful information. I have 3 kids plus myself to pack for. I was wondering do you have the Travel Itinerary Sheet in a fillable format that you could share? I don’t have the adobe pro to convert it. I follow you on Snap Chat this is where I heard about your PodCast. Thank you I enjoy following you.
Minnie says
You mentioned you insert a memo. Do you have pictures of this? Is this in Evernote or in your phone? I guess I’m confused on how to put this all together. I am assuming the Itinerary that you have shared is different from the memo where you list the items you need. I have an Android.
Kerry says
Great tips Chalene! I like to bring an empty refillable water container like my thermos. I can usually fill it up with hot or cold water for free once I am past security. The hot water and coffee on planes is nasty. They never flush those lines out properly. Then I can bring my own tea bag or ask for a lemon wedge and have an alkalizing drink on the plane. Once at my destination I can keep my coffeeor water hot too. Handy if I am in cold meeting rooms.
Sarah Foster says
THIS IS AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!
Cynthia says
Love these tips! In addtion… its a great idea to ROLL all of your clothes, this is an excellent way to get them to their destination without wrinkling them, and also gives you a lot more room in your suitcase!
Hope that helps everyone! xx

This was insightful. I leave for a trip in a week and am incorporating several things into my planning. I remember you mentioning something about iPhone notes and how to enhance the list with bubbles and check marks etc. where do I find out about that?
Michelle Weise says
These tips were so helpful. Traveling this week and as much as I think I planned well, every little bit of extra wisdom helps! 😀

When I first heard the title of this episode, I thought, “oh, that’s not for me.” Boy, was I wrong! Used these tips on my last a) vacation and a recent b) business trip–what a huge difference they made in terms of time savings, preparation, and allowing myself and my family to see and do everything we wanted to see and do. I even discovered “Instacart” and used it to have groceries delivered to our Air bnb in Florida while I lounged at the pool–awesome! Thank you. I forward this episode to EVERY-one. It’s a serious game-changer in terms of travel for me
