My number four mantra is to expect that 80% of the time, you hit your mark. To expect a hundred percent is to set yourself up for failure. It’s just unrealistic. If you make your goal to hit your mark 80% of the time, you will succeed. You just can’t expect that things are always going to go right. You also have to adopt the mindset that those missteps, those miscalculations, those errors, the things that other people call failures, those are going to happen. They are supposed to happen. They actually make you more successful.
Ups and Downs
It’s expecting that 20% of the time, I’m going to wake up and not be in the mood to do anything. That 20% of the time, things are not going to work out as I expect them to. The 20% of the people I meet are not going to like me that 20% of my outcomes are not going to be as I’d planned them to be. And I think that people who are successful recognize, “that’s life,” it’s like the waves crashing in the ocean. You expect highs and lows and it’s those highs and lows that help us to identify that life is good. But if you set yourself up thinking that every day, a hundred percent of the time, you’re going to eat clean, you’re going to exercise, you’re going to get through every single item on your to-do list, you’ll end up disappointed and frustrated.
No Time for Disappointment
If you think that a hundred percent of the time you’re going to feel good when you wake up and accomplished when you go to bed, won’t hit your mark. If that’s your expectation, you WILL always be disappointed. Because it’s just not possible, it’s just not within the realm of reality.
So successful people, people who are really effective with their life, understand that 80% hitting your mark is huge! And by allowing a few ups and downs, wins and losses, there’s never tremendous disappointment. Because how we stay motivated is by feeling good about ourselves. It’s really tough to get yourself up each day if you feel like you are a disappointment to others. And most importantly, disappointment to yourself.
But if you know that the goal is 80% and you are trying to apply the 80-20 rule to your life, you will feel accomplished. Just expect that there’s going to be speed bumps, they are no big deal, nobody is perfect, nothing goes exactly according to plan, it’s all part of the process. Don’t beat yourself up over it, and most importantly don’t let a speed bump become an obstacle.
