Getting into business for yourself may seem like a great option because you have ideas and plans that can set you apart from everyone else. You’re probably eager to get started, but one of the biggest mistakes a new entrepreneur can make is prioritizing work over strategizing. I say this because many people starting out know they can work harder than anyone, put in more hours, and get lots done. This can lead to feeling like you must do everything for your business, and not trusting anyone to help, will lead to stunted success and potentially burning yourself out.
Many new entrepreneurs left the work force to create their own business because they can usually outwork anyone. In the beginning it does require a lot of work from you, but using these skills in self-employment can spell disaster. Working so hard right out of the gate can have you second-guessing your choice because you find yourself working incredibly hard and not finding success or not getting ahead as much as you would like.
To avoid this mistake consider the time you spend working on tasks and how much time you could save if you spent some time prioritizing and strategizing. If you learn skills and plan how you’ll implement them in your short-term and long-term goals you will see where you can delegate and where you need to focus your attention. You don’t have to do it all yourself, and trying to do it all will only limit success and burn you out.
I like to think of this mistake as “shoot first, aim later” so many new entrepreneurs will try to figure it out as they go, or use all their energy to get things going and forget that they don’t know where they’re headed. This can lead to missing opportunities and can be avoided by spending some time strategizing. Sitting down to look at what it will take to make your plans happen, what pieces need to be in place, what skills need to be learned, and how much time it will take to get everything accomplished will save you tons of time in the long run and will give each step forward toward some focus. In order to find success you need to know what every possible thing will require so there aren’t any surprises or missed opportunities.
Being a new entrepreneur can be very exciting and is full of potential and opportunity. Be sure to make the most of this new situation and spend time planning and strategizing. This will give you a greater sense of direction and will fill in what you know, what you need to know, and where you need to go to make your business a success. Using your skills to benefit your progress will only help you, so don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself. Having patience and faith that you will succeed is key to taking things slow and doing things right the first time, instead of jumping into things blind and missing valuable opportunities.
