Getting hacked is a common occurrence. Internet security is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Most people use the Internet on a daily basis, on their computers, phones, and tablets, and since technology is always growing things are getting less safe everyday. In my experience it takes more than a password or a personal security question to keep you protected and to avoid being hacked. We live very public lives online, and because of this we’re putting ourselves at risk by creating our own passwords and providing accurate security answers. I’m going to explain why passwords aren’t enough, and what to use to increase your safety with encryption.
Password Safety
Each account we access has a password. Some passwords are complicated, others are short and easy to remember depending on the website or password requirements. Passwords protect you because they are unique to you. Most of the time you create your own passwords and have the ability to change them if you feel they are too similar throughout your accounts, or if you forget one. Typically we make passwords that are easy to remember, but this can also mean that others can guess what we use. If you use the same password for multiple accounts, or a variant of the same it may be easier to be hacked. Since we live such public lives online your password may be easy to guess based on what you share, like your hobbies or things you enjoy.
Security Questions
Security questions are a second tier of safety because they’re supposed to be unique and personal to you, most of the time asking questions only you would know the answer to. These security questions can give a false sense of security because we do live such public lives. Typically people share the names of their children and other family members, and may also have included personal information about their past on things like blogs or Facebook. Because this information is out there it can be easy to guess the answers to security questions, which makes this the easiest way to be hacked. It happened to me and I had no clue it was that simple for someone to know things I thought were private.
1Password
Given that the two most important pieces of Internet security are passwords and security questions, the app 1Password works to keep all your information safe and can generate passwords or answers for you. The app works by encrypting your information, which is stored with a complicated master password that is private and specific you. Once you have an account the app provides vaults for you to store your log in information in, and has custom fields to store things like security questions. Using these features you can create answers and passwords that are not linked to your personal life and therefore are much more difficult to guess based on your Internet presence. Everything is stored in a very secure place and can be accessed on both your computer and other personal devices like a cellphone or tablet.
