How to Raise Confident Children
Raising confident kids is all about universal support. Children are curious and fragile, so it’s important to support them no matter what the outcome and show them love. You’re their foundation and anything negative that comes from you can have a huge impact on how they are as adults. These four tips will help you instill confidence in your kid and remind you how important a positive foundation is to them.
Positive Affirmations
Positive affirmations are important when it comes to raising confident kids because they need to know that they’re great just as they are. These positive comments are especially important when it comes to their weight and body. Don’t say anything about their weight or body, they already know and are probably getting feedback about it at school. Hearing negative comments about this area will only make things worse, so when in doubt just them they’re beautiful. Other than that they don’t need to hear anything else.
Value them as they are
Children want to feel important, but you need to show them they’re valuable just because of who they are, not because of what they can do. Teaching a child they’re only valuable because of their good grades or skills is teaching that value comes from success and that failure is disappointment. Give your child love because they are kind to others, because they are persistent at trying new things, or are fearless. Showing love and praise because of who they are and the things they were born with will help them see that no matter their success or the outcome, they have value and can be valued by others.
Let them fail
I know it’s difficult to see your child struggle and maybe even fail but it’s hugely important for their confidence. You only build confidence by having experience, and the only way to get experience is to try new things and struggle a little. The most confident people aren’t afraid to fail because they’ve done it, they know how it feels, and they’ve learned from it. The most successful people fail the most often, because it’s necessary for finding success. Let your child try new things, let them attempt their chores and make a solid effort. Don’t critique their work or do everything for them, it may feel like you’re doing them a favor now but it’s not helping them grown into confident adults.
Radiate self-confidence
Your kid is learning how to treat themselves by watching and hearing you. It’s true, you’re a mirror to how you should feel and act towards yourself. Parents who struggle with their weight create adults who struggle with their weight, because parents are role models. Children take cues and get their confidence from their parents, so be a great role model by treating yourself right. Think of it this way, talk to yourself both in your head and out loud as you would to your children. If you won’t say it to them, don’t say it to yourself. By radiating self-confidence your children will pick up on it and carry through to adulthood.
