If you think of life like seasons most people do two out of four. What I mean is that people typically create and work, and forget to celebrate. It’s easy to get caught up in endless projects and being constantly on the go, but if we don’t take time to celebrate we’ll forget why we’re working in the first place. I’m hoping that I can teach you how to add a harvest season into your life and remember to celebrate your successes instead of reaching milestones and just moving along to the next one.
What is a harvest season?
I typically approach work in four seasons or categories, creation, growth, harvest, and fallow. The first two are pretty easy to understand. Creation is where I come up with new ideas, and growth is where I work on turning an idea into a reality. Harvest is where I celebrate my achievements. It may sound strange, but sometimes you just need to stop and enjoy what you’ve accomplished, much like farmers do in the autumn during harvest season. We have to celebrate what our ideas grew into and give ourselves a pat on the back. Without this celebration we only have working time and not working time, which can be very daunting. I used to see harvest as scarcity because I felt like if I wasn’t working I was wasting, but that’s the exact opposite of harvest. Now I make sure to take time off after a huge accomplishment and it’s helped me enjoy the whole process.
How to add a harvest season
Now that you know what I mean when I say harvest, it’s time to change your habits to allow yourself some down time to celebrate. It all starts with gratitude and praise for yourself. I know this can be hard but start small and work up to something larger. As an example if I spend my day filming videos, the next day is a harvest day where I may get my hair done or lounge around the house. Typically if I have a really full day with lots of work, the next day is a harvest day. I use my time to mentally reflect on the big deal all that work was and take a moment to celebrate. You have to realize what you accomplished and let yourself enjoy it.
This can be tough at first, it was for me. To hold yourself accountable try enlisting someone else to help you celebrate. It can also be helpful to make a list of things that are worth celebrating, which can help you see why it’s okay to take a day off and reflect. There are tons of ways to celebrate, from small stuff like more computer time or lounging around and watching a movie, to large celebrations like family vacations and spa days.
The important thing to remember is that it’s okay to celebrate and you deserve to because you earned it with your hard work and dedication. You must give yourself permission to celebrate because you want to be a role model who celebrates success. Too often we think it’s counterproductive to celebrate success, to take time out to reflect and have down time, but it strengthens our work ethic and reminds us that we are amazing. So take time and make room in your life for a harvest season.
