In a perfect world everyone would be happy all the time, right? Every day we are trying to achieve happiness and some days it works out, other days it doesn’t. Finding happiness in daily activities takes time, patience, and practice. One way to find happiness is to use your feelings to help you set your goals and plan your future. In order to do that you need to first find what makes you happy and then set your goals with that in mind. I’m going to break it down for you so you can start finding happiness today.
What makes you happy?
Everyone has things that make him or her happy, from their favorite hobby, to family, or even something as simple as reading a book or going for a walk. The key to staying happy is pin pointing what it is makes you happy, and then making time for it and even setting goals with it. I want you to think about how you want to feel, more specifically how you feel when you’re happy. After you understand that feeling answer this question, what needs to be met in order to feel happy? This is your starting point.
I personally feel happy when I feel like I have freedom of choice. Knowing that something is my choice, and I have the freedom to choose what happens and what direction I go in, that’s happiness. So my answer would be, freedom of choice needs to be met in order to feel happy. Another way to look at it is by using the phrase; I need to feel _____ in order to feel happiness. Answering these questions and filling in the blanks are the starting point to setting goals with happiness in mind.
Setting goals
Once you have an idea of what makes you feel happy, it’s time to start thinking about goal setting and happiness. Most people are afraid of big goals. It’s either because they seem too far away and feel impossible to reach, or they’ve had bad experiences with trying to complete large goals and fell short. I think part of the reason we’re afraid of big goals is because we try to achieve goals that represent visual success. I’m talking about getting a car, a house, the “perfect” life. Those things aren’t close to you, they don’t really make you happy, and so you fall short in reaching them.
Instead we need to think about how we want to feel, which is probably happy, and set goals based on that. Use the statements from above as focal points for your goals. Don’t focus on money or status, focus on how you’ll feel if you decide to make something specific a goal for yourself. Would saying yes to that goal give you the feeling of _____? That blank is the same one you filled in earlier. You have to be honest with yourself here. These are your goals and it’s your life, so only you know the answers. If you give yourself excuses to try and reach goals that won’t make you happy, you’ll only be farther away from the life you really want. Setting goals is only the beginning, truly focus on a life direction and the rest will fall into place.
