Imagine you had to step out on a stage and speak to over 1,000 people. As you approach the microphone, you look out over a sea of 1,000 faces staring back at you, waiting for you to begin. Does just the thought of this get your nervous and sweating? That’s the effect it has on most people! Public speaking is the #1 fear! And this fear is also the one thing that holds most people back from getting what they want in their career, their business, their relationships, and their life.
But this doesn’t have to be the case! You don’t have to let nervous energy keep you from seizing amazing opportunities to share your message and accomplish any goal you want. So today, I want to share with you my 11 best practices to control nervous energy, be calm and collected, and speak like a pro!
11 Tips for Controlling Nervous Energy
#1 – ADRENALINE.
Use your adrenaline to your advantage. To harness your adrenaline, move more.
#2 – ISOMETRIC CONTRACTIONS.
Give your energy a place to go without causing a scene. When you can’t move around, squeeze all of the muscles in your abdominals and lower body to release it.
#3 – 7/11 BREATHING.
Slow your breath and relax. Breathe in for 7 counts and exhale for 11 counts.
#4 – VISUALIZATION.
Picture your success. See yourself in the situation and picture it exactly as you want it to happen.
#5 – MUSIC.
Get in the zone. Find a song that makes you feel the way you want to feel when you speak, and listen just before you take the stage.
#6 – GRATITUDE.
Give them something to do. Take the focus off you, and take a moment to collect yourself when you begin. I start with gratitude and have my participants send a text to someone that made it possible for them to attend my event.
#7 – MANTRAS.
Focus on the positive. Create your own list of positive mantras that pump you up, and go through them before you speak.
#8 – FIND THE GREEN ROOM.
Find a place to collect your thoughts. Having a moment of privacy before you begin helps you focus.
#9 – DO A REALITY CHECK.
Your audience wants you to succeed. Nobody can tell that you’re nervous, and they don’t know what you’ve left out.
#10 – CUPPING.
Pound out the nervousness. “Cupping” is the practice of releasing physical energy through vibrations. Make fists with your hands, and tap your body moving from the bottom up.
#11 – BITE YOUR TONGUE.
Prevent dry mouth that comes with nervousness. If your mouth gets dry, just bite your tongue on both sides to stimulate the production of saliva.
And most importantly, remember, you’re NOT nervous…You’re EXCITED for the amazing opportunity that’s in front of you! Next time you have an opportunity to share your message with others (whether it’s a thousand people or just one person), use these techniques to stay calm and focused and nail it!
