2 Principles for Goal Setting
Goal setting is a great way to focus your energy and effort into a single task, but sometimes goals can obscure your view of what’s really important. I think that everyone should have all sorts of goals, from daily to long-term, but there’s two important pieces to remember along the way. I hope these two principles will help not only in setting goals but also in achieving whatever it is you want in life.
Principle #1: Expect to hit your mark 80% of the time.
When you think of achieving, you want to do all you can every day until that goal is met, but what about those off days? Sometimes we just don’t want to do it whether it’s trying to run your business or getting through a workout. There will be down days and if you try to achieve 100% every time, those slip up and missteps will set you way back. Instead aim for success 80% of the time and you will succeed. Life has ups and downs, and we need to plan for those as well. If you don’t you’re just setting yourself up for failure. The highs and lows of life are what help us identify that life is good. You’ll never be disappointed if you aim for 80% and you’ll stay motivated by feeling good about yourself because you achieve that 80% most days.
Principle #2: The joy is in the journey.
Setting a goal and achieving it is one thing, but if you fly through life only focused on the goal you’re going to miss out on a lot. Think back on the last time you achieved something you were really proud of. When you look back on that time you don’t just remember achieving the goal, you also remember the long road you journeyed to get there. You feel accomplished because of all the difficulties you overcame to achieve, so don’t forget that. Don’t get caught up in the goal, the point is the progress you make. Progress is in the struggles, the skills you learned, the people you met and got help from, and how you expanded your mind so you could achieve. If you love the journey, you’ll love life, no matter what your goals are.
It can be easy to get caught up in the momentum of success and forget to look back on where you started, but there’s joy in that journey more than the achievement itself. When you’re setting goals make sure you remember to consider what you can realistically achieve and when. There’s no worse deterrent than overloading yourself early and quitting on your dreams before you even start. Setting attainable goals, or breaking up a large goal into smaller ones will help you not only enjoy the journey but enjoy all the struggles and difficulties it takes to get that goal under your belt. Goals are a part of life so make sure you enjoy the day to day as well as the big successes.
