Tips for Making Freemium Videos with Periscope
Periscope is a great format for creating and testing topics for freemium videos. I think the best freemium for a beginner is a video series about dealing with a struggle or challenge in your life. Teaching tips about handling a struggle or challenge, from divorce to losing a job, will help your audience see you’re relatable and real. This will open you up to people who will stick around for the long haul and create a community of like-minded people.
Topics
Coming up with a topic within the challenge or struggle category can be difficult because it’s something so close to you. Asking friends or family what your struggles or challenges have been and how you dealt with them will make coming with tips for coping and working through it that much easier. Some popular topics include divorce, death in the family, relationship issues, bad diagnosis, or losing a job, but any topic that is close to you and relates to you will work.
Video series
Creating a video series on the topic you choose will work best in a one tip per video format. Once you have your topic, outline five to seven tips that helped you and will help your audience through. Each tip will become a video where you teach a short five minute lesson. These tips will build on each other, which will entice your viewers to tune in and apply those tips to their lives. Recording yourself can be scary because it’s new and more intimate than writing blog posts or tweets, but you will benefit that much more because people get to know the real you. Don’t worry about getting flustered or messing up, Periscope has a delete feature and you can always edit your videos later.
Content
Each video should include a descriptive introduction showcasing you, your skills, and your credibility on the topic. This introduction will be very similar or even the same in each video, which will show your consistency and will give new viewers a chance to know you before you get into the topic. New viewers may join at any time so make sure you always introduce yourself and share what you want people to know about you.
Along with an introduction each video should include a call to action at the end, something you want your viewers to do using your tips. This homework will make it more obvious as to how your tip will fit into their lives, and will make your videos more connected, leading viewers to follow you and watch each video. It will also make the series easy for anyone to follow down the line as freemium. Giving homework and linking it to your website in the form of a comment or response will grow your site’s popularity as well as your community. Others can read the comments, identify, and communicate; showing that everyone is connected to your content. Comments and responses will have a long life on your site and will also vouch for your freemium before new people join in and watch your videos.
