Here are my 3 tips to boost your metabolism and lose weight without dieting. Yes! It’s possible. Some of these tips might make you serial dieters a little uncomfortable, however I want you to go into this video with an open mind. I don’t know about you, but as I’ve gotten older, I feel like my body has let me down! And I’ll be completely honest with you… I’ve dieted. And that is one of the worst things you can do for your metabolism. So my goal with this video is to help you reset your body and lose weight WITHOUT dieting.
3 Tips to Boost your Metabolism and Lose Weight without Dieting:
- STOP DIETING. When you restrict calories, you DO lose weight, BUT you also lose muscle! Your body’s job is to adapt, so at first when you restrict, you lose a lot of weight, but if you continue to restrict the body adapts by holding on to everything you put in it and burning LESS calories! You should be eating a diet that is high in Micronutrients.
- YOU NEED MUSCLE. Muscle is what you need to burn fat and calories. Muscle is what helps our body stay young! If you want to lose weight, you should be lifting a minimum of 3 to 4 days a week.
- KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. The average person is under estimating what they’re consuming and over estimating what they’re burning. So figure out what the right ratio is for your diet. You’ve got to eat the RIGHT amount of fats, proteins, and carbs!

Yes! I’ve proven that many times in life…especially using weights…incorporated into my daily workout routine whether it’s PIYO, Run on beach, zumba dance cardio, TURBO JAM!!! Always notice more results when incorporating 5-10 lb weights.

Chalene – this is great. But, you cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet. Yes, muscle is important – but, real food dictates your epigenetics.
And, while micronutrients are important – it is the macros that really define the diet.
In other words, you can have a diet high in micronutrients (from supplements) and still eat a garbage diet full of insulin raising carbs.
You don’t mention the correct ratio of macronutrients. And, that is somewhat subjective to the person. Mine is 50% fat, 30% Pro, and 20% CHO. It works for me and I have lost a lot of weight. More importantly, my blood chemistry has improved significantly.

Hi Chalene! You have definitely changed this girl’s life! I have PCOS and was blessed to get pregnant… Twice. Turbofire is my soul mate workout and after my first pregnancy, I lost 60 lbs, after my second pregnancy I lost almost 70 pounds between Turbofire, chalean extreme and Les Mills Combat. For the past year, my body has stopped reacting to my workouts, and my medicine. I started doing advanced Turbofire (I have your original version) and I fell in love with my legs and my arms, but still, no weight change.
Let me add, I’m in the army. I have weight standards. Right now, I am to standard, but barely because of howucj muscle I carry. They have an old fashioned BMI measure to system that they are looking at updating. I’m seeing two health specialists that have redone my nutrition plans for me and my workout plans. I am being told to step back on intensity and bring it down. I hate stepping it down… It does make sense scientifically… Any other thoughts or advice?
Chalene Johnson says
Hi Jessica! thank you for your service and for leaving me a comment. If your body has stopped reacting, then somethings going on. I’m not a medical professional, but it’s important to pay attention to the signs your body is giving you 🙂 and if it’s not reacting (positively) the way it used to, then it’s telling you something… and that something is most likely some kind of change. I know you said you hate stepping down, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it forever 🙂 maybe just pull back temporarily to let you body rest and reset. Hopefully that helps!

Thank you. Love all your tips, videos, IGs and Snaps.
Does age play a factor anywhere in boosting metabolism? I am 52. At 48 I got very active -did turbo Fire for 2 yrs, hiked, walked and ate healthy. Lost a whopping 3-5 lbs. so depressing and overwhelming. So I stopped. Gained about 20lbs. Been watching mostly carbs and lost about 10 lbs but now nothing. Is it my age??? Help.
Chalene Johnson says
Hi Sandi! Yes! Age plays a huge role… especially if you’re someone who has dieted throughout your life. Each of those diets effected, and most likely slowed down, your metabolism. Though your age is a factor, you can reset it with the tips in this video 🙂

I agree with this very much! Is there a macronutrients calculator to determine what balance one should have? I love your videos and inspiration! You energy is so inspiring and I get so much since I’ve followed you! Thank you for all the amazing content you provide!!!

Absolutely true. I lost some weight when I did cardio but when I started lifting with your peogram ChalenExtreme I lost it that much faster. Currently I’ve been lifting 5 days a week and hit a plateau because I wasn’t eating enough. As soon as I started eating more healthy fats I started feeling the weight come off Again. Thank you for your tips.

Chalene I do barre and Pilates 3 times a week does this count as weight training? I use 3 lb weights in super high reps. I’m getting more toned and lean which is why I switched because actual weight lifting bulks me very easier because im shorter but I do worry I don’t have as much muscle.
Chalene Johnson says
Hi Jay! thanks for your question 🙂 It counts as a type of weight training. However, what I’m referring to specifically in this is HEAVY… heavy weight training. However, Pilates and barre are FABULOUS workouts!! I have absolutely nothing against them 🙂 but in regards to your metabolism, heavy heavy weight training is key.

Chalene,
Thank you for the tips especially on lifting weights 3-4 times per week. Thank you so much!
Jane says
First tip freaked me out “stop dieting” and never thought about lifting 4x a week but look at you and Jennell! Thank you again for sharing!!

So, I’ve done 21 Day Fix diet twice now. I lost 30 lbs both times. After I’ve lost the weight, and let’s say I slip up on my diet for a day. I’ll somehow move to self destructing behavior, with the mindset of “well I already messed up so I might as well continue eating bad.” Then, several months later, I’ve ruined it all. I don’t know how to get over that all or nothing attitude.

That is all I keep reading about us the weight lifting! I have a hard time giving up my cardio to lift weights but I know it’s something I need to do!
Sara BOLING says
Great content. I’m totally gonna stop dieting. Praise the LORD. Thanks Chalene

Love reading your stuff. Absolutely love your workouts. I’ve counted macros, I’ve followed the fix containers, I’ve done it all. Tried it all. Nothing works, nothing helps. I just keep putting weight on. Very frustrating, when you do everything and see no results.
Kristina says
Charlene you are great! I started doing turbo jam many years ago and it worked and now I moved to California added you on snapchat and follow you daily! You are practical reasonable and honest and that is rare in this day and age! Keep working hard and I cannot wait to hear about your study on different body types! Thank you! PS I would love to train with you!

Girl all this makes sense. But eating enough, then feel tired and sluggish. I understand that holding on to everything and I mean everything and my muscle has turned into J E L L O!!!
Julie says
The ratio of foods are sometimes confusing to figure out and I workout so I’m not sure I’m even consuming enough at times. I lift weights with Body Beast and do Max 30. I want to change to HIIT workouts instead of Max 30 now and the HIIT workouts sometimes incorporate weights with some of the videos and really get my heart rate up and push me. I also do Body Beast. I don’t want to give up because I love challenging myself but need to figure baseline calories to maintain weight . Is this something you can help me with in more depth?
Rachel McLain says
Do the t25 workouts, especially the lower focus, count as lifting and building muscle?
Karen says
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! You are right on Chalene. Humbly, my only addition would be water, water, water.
Thank you so much for everything! I’m a huge fan… Going to go do some Chalene extreme right now

Love these! Especially #3!

So glad to find your blog, I bought turbo jam as a teenager and (almost ten years later) last year started it, actually keeping up with it. It has been a long journey, I take steroids everyday for medical reasons so it makes it hard to lose weight but because of you I have lost over 60 pounds, fallen in love with exercise and am the happiest I’ve ever been with myself. I still have a little ways to go, but thank you Chalene you have influenced me in amazing ways!
P.s. I love turbo jam and piyo, thinking about trying turbo fire next!
Chalene Johnson says
Hi Carissa!!! thank you so much for your comment!!! <3

How can I figure out the right amount of macros and calories for my personal weight loss?
Jenn says
Makes a lot of sense, Chalene!
I’ve done the whole “lose weight” by restricting calorie intake thing… and yep… gained it all back and then some. Now I’m into the gym 2x/week and lifting weights — strength-training. I do plan to increase my days/week. I’m also finding the need to include cardio, though, as strength training alone isn’t helping me any with my endurance… I still get out of breath in some activities.
AND, lastly, I’m learning the importance of nutrition. Exercise, alone, doesn’t cut it. It’s true what they say: 70% nutrition, 30% gym.

I heard “know your number” quite a bit; how do we determine our adequate amount of fat, carbs, protein.. for our body? Thanks in advance! ☺️
